   The Joys of Multilingual Neuropsychological Assessment

    Neuropsychologists are increasingly discovering the challenge, necessity, feasibility, and satisfaction of providing competent cross-language evaluations. Currently, 44% of California’s population speaks a language other than English at home. Many neuropsychologists approach evaluations of clients who do not share their language with guilt, shame, and fear. This symposium will present protocols and tools for such work and directions for acquiring needed skills. Topics will include ethics, professional preparation, case selection, pre- and post-evaluation cultural research, interpreter-use skills, cultural history-taking, testing considerations, bilingual evaluation, and cultural/linguistic adaptation of evaluation outcomes. This presentation aims to transform multilingual assessment into an experience of accomplishment, satisfaction, discovery, and professional renewal. 

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Learn to evaluate the linguistic, cultural, immigration, and acculturation backgrounds of their patients and utilize these factors to inform their neuropsychological services.

    2. Identify the advantages, disadvantages, and ethical considerations involved in various modes of language communication in assessment, including use of live interpreters, phone or video interpreters, bilingual psychometrists/interpreters.

    3. Identify principles of test translation/adaptation; means of finding, evaluating, acquiring, and using non-English tests; and pragmatic and ethical approaches to evaluation when only suboptimal tests are available.




    Tedd Judd, PhD, ABPP-CN, is a Certified Hispanic Mental Health Specialist and cross-cultural clinical and forensic neuropsychologist with 35 years of experience. He has evaluated clients from about 80 countries and has taught neuropsychology in 22 countries. He is Past President of the Hispanic Neuropsychological Society. He teaches a practicum in non-English cross-cultural neuropsychology and is the academic co-director of Central America’s first Master’s degree in neuropsychology at the Universidad del Valle, Guatemala.

    This program has been approved for 2.0 APA and QME CE credits. NCNF is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NCNF maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
