Course Description:
The primary purpose of this workshop is to provide an up-to-date review of supervision issues for professional psychologists. Detailed registration information is given below.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the conference, participants will be able to:
Report general updates on Supervision Issues including such things as requirements specific to SPE, including direct supervision (APA accreditation standards), APA Supervision Guidelines & application of best practices in accordance with APA ethics, competency-based clinical supervision and developmental models, and evidence-based (best) practices.
2. Explain competency-based clinical supervision: Alliance and the learning cycle
3. Describe issues related to diversity, culture and personal reactivity in supervision
4. Provide guidelines regarding evaluation of and feedback to supervisees.
5. Describe some approaches to addressing competence and problems in professional performance
6. Demonstrate knowledge of application of law, ethics, and risk management to supervision.
7. Explain overall specialty supervision (e.g. in behavioral medicine, EBP applications, etc.). (Time permitting).
8. Articulate next steps—where is supervision going? (Time permitting).
Presenter: Edward Shafranske, PhD
Edward Shafranske., Ph.D., ABPP, is a professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, has been president of APA Division 36, a member of the APA Council of Representatives, been editor or co-editor of several professional journals, and Chair of the California Psychological Association Division of Education and Training.
He has published widely in the area of supervision and is an author of the following: Falender, C.A., & Shafranske, E. P. (2004). Clinical supervision: A competency based approach. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. Dr. Schafranske also maintains a private clinical practice in Irvine, California, and is an active and popular workshop presenter.
