Best Practices inMind:

Psychological Assessment Guidelines for

Transgender and Nonbinary Children and Youth

with Karisa L. Barrow, Psy.D., Tanisha Stewart, Psy.D.,

and Aerin Riegelsberger, B.A.

Western society holds unrelenting expectations that we should all fit into binary gender identities: you should be either male or female and mentally and emotionally identify with the gender your body (anatomy) was assigned at birth. Given this identification you should act, dress and behave accordingly. Children and adolescents facing these internal conflicts with those around them may be confused, bullied or rejected by their peers, families, teachers and congregations. They can become isolated, anxious, depressed, develop eating disorders, engage in self-harm behaviors and worse yet be suicidal. Transgender children’s caregivers often don’t know how to address their child’s needs. They too may be confused, overwhelmed and pressured to care for their child by expectations of others.

Assessors can provide informed insight about how to best alleviate transgender and caregiver suffering that is anchored in being clinically competent by “doing no harm.” These practices are not only legally and clinically appropriate but can be therapeutic and healing in the process.

This talk will provide participants guiding principles and practices when working with the transgender community with an emphasis on developing gender affirming assessment skills when utilizing assessment measures and how we interpret the data to discern what is the source of the problem and how to address it. We will look at the constellation of variables that will lead to treatment planning recommendations with regard to social, medical, legal, and custodial/parenting recommendations –considering the youth as whole true self.
