The need for active duty and civilian neuropsychologists to work with service members has grown dramatically. Non-lethal exposure to blast injuries has increased over the years. Blast injuries and Posttraumatic Stress Disorders are considered signature injuries of the current conflicts. This talk will provide an overview of blast injury including the physics of blast injury. We will review the human and animal literature and discuss issues that must be considered when evaluating individuals exposed to explosive blasts.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the mechanisms of injury associated with blast injury
  2. Understand the physics of blast injury
  3. Discuss symptom overlap between blast injury and PTSD
  4. List important considerations to take into account when evaluating individuals exposed to blast injury
