Carly Demopoulos Ph.D. is a clinical neuropsychologist and developmental neuroscientist with expertise in multimodal neuroimaging, particularly magnetoencephalography (MEG). She is an Assistant Professor at UCSF in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and is Director of the Neurodevelopmental Assessment and Imaging Laboratory and Neurodevelopmental Assessment Practicum. She has over 20 years of experience working with children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Her laboratory at UCSF utilizes multi-modal neuroimaging and behavioral and neuropsychological assessment to investigate the impact of sensorimotor functioning in the clinical presentation of autism and related disorders. Our current research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms that underlie the heterogenous presentation of speech and voice characteristics, as well as broader verbal and non-verbal communication abilities, in individuals with ASD. The goal of this program of research is to identify novel intervention targets to advance treatment of communication difficulties.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate how differences in sensory processing and sensorimotor control could have a cascade effect on development of clinical symptoms in autism

2. Identify potential future directions for novel approaches to treatment
